This new feature titled 'Force Dark Mode for Web Contents' will allow users to convert any site into a dark mode version by applying various color filters and image inversion formulas.
For example, BleepingComputer does not currently have a dark mode theme on its own, but when we enabled this feature, it gave us a pretty decent looking one.
When enabling this feature, Chrome will let you select various settings that determine how the browser will force a dark mode theme on the site.
The various settings are:
- Enabled
- Enabled with simple HSL-based inversion
- Enabled with simple CIELAB-based inversion
- Enabled with selective image inversion
- Enabled with selective inversion of non-image elements
- Enabled with selective inversion of everything.
The HSL and CIELAB settings use different algorithms on how colors should be displayed, but for BleepingComputer and other sites we tested, it made the header look pretty bad.
3d modeling mac or pc. In our tests, we found the Enabled with selective inversion of non-image elements looked the best. If you want to play with this feature, I suggest you try the various settings to determine what looks best to you.
How to enable forced dark mode on web sites
To have Chrome 78 force a dark mode theme on web sites you visit, you need to enable the 'Force Dark Mode for Web Contents' flag by following these steps:
- Download the Chrome Canary build and install it.
- In the address bar, enter chrome://flags and then press enter.
- Search for enable-force-dark and an experimental flag titled 'Force Dark Mode for Web Contents' will appear.
- Select the Enabled setting you wish to use. In our experiments, the 'Enabled with selective inversion of non-image elements' setting worked well, but you should experiment with each setting to determine the one you like the best. Then click on the Relaunch button to restart Chrome and enable the feature
To disable this feature, you can follow the above steps, but this time set the setting to Default.
